Jay: Welcome to B-PEOPLE, Keisha and Faustina! We’re excited to chat with you about your experiences as a female hip hop duo, especially in a genre where competition can be fierce. To start off, how would you describe the current landscape for female artists in hip hop?
Keisha: Thank you for having us! The landscape has definitely evolved. When we started, it felt like we were constantly fighting to be recognized, not just as female artists, but as serious contenders in the hip hop game. Today, there’s more visibility for women in the industry, but the competition is still intense.
Faustina: For sure. It’s like you’re always in a race, especially with more female rappers entering the scene every day. We’re all elevating each other, but that competitiveness can also become overwhelming at times. You have to find a balance between supporting your peers and pushing yourself to stand out.
Jay: Can you share a personal experience that highlights the challenges you faced in the industry?
Faustina: Absolutely. I remember when we were starting out, we had a showcase booked, and we were super excited. But when we got there, we realized we were the only female act on the lineup. The energy in the room seemed to favor the guys, and it was hard to get our voices heard.
Keisha: Yeah, that moment taught us the importance of resilience. After performing, we made it a point to connect with the other artists and the audience, turning that initial disadvantage into an opportunity to network. You have to show up, show out, and make your presence known.

Jay: What do you think female hip hop artists have to fight for in this genre?
Keisha: Rights and respect, honestly. From equal pay to having a seat at the table when it comes to decision-making. We often have to work twice as hard to gain the same recognition that some male counterparts might receive more easily.
Faustina: And beyond that, there’s the fight against stereotypes. Women in hip hop are often boxed into specific categories: the "sexy rapper", the "girly rapper", etc. We want to break those molds and express all facets of our identities.
Jay: What advice would you give to aspiring female artists looking to dive into hip hop?
Faustina: First and foremost, own your story. Your unique experiences are your power. Don’t feel pressured to conform to what’s expected of female rappers.
Keisha: Yes! And build a strong support system. Surround yourself with people who uplift you—other artists, friends, and mentors. Community is key in this industry.
Faustina: Lastly, be prepared to hustle. It’s not just about the talent; you’ve got to market yourself, network, and stay persistent even when the going gets tough.

Keisha: Just a reminder to all the ladies out there—your voice matters. Don’t ever let the competitive nature of the industry silence you.
Faustina: And keep pushing forward! We need more diverse voices in hip hop, so stand strong and claim your space on that stage.
